Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC)

Currently 46.2% of entering first-time freshmen to the California State University System (CSU) must take remedial classes in reading and writing. As part of CSU’s Early Assessment Program (EAP), an augmentation on the 11th grade California Standards Test (CST) in English, identified these students in need of additional instruction to help them meet the proficiency requirements of college English courses.

CSU and practicing high school teachers have designed 11th and 12th grade curriculum materials to give needed support to these students. Standards-aligned materials are organized around a template that includes pre-reading, reading, post-reading, pre-writing, writing, and post-writing, as well as academic vocabulary and grammar.

High school junior and senior English teachers will be given a series of lessons designed to prepare students for the expository reading and writing demands they will face in CSU English courses. These materials can be offered as a stand-alone, A-G approved course, or as “drop-in” units in regular and advanced English courses.

This four-day training is presented by CSU faculty and Riverside County junior and senior English teachers. As part of the training, teachers will receive a set of professional reference books, as well as the two binders of template-based lessons.

Differentiating Your Classroom for English Learners

Based on the premise that all children can learn, this session helps participants deliver effective lessons that can significantly improve achievement for all learners, including English learners. Participating teachers will consider ways to differentiate instruction based upon their students’ primary language and proficiency levels in English. This working session will utilize student data, including CELDT scores, to design assessments to key understandings. Integrating these highly-effective methods can improve instruction and achievement for every student.

Effective Teaching Practices: Techniques That Raise Academic and Behavioral Expectations (Secondary)

Classroom management is a skill that is not only learned but practiced daily. The focused outcomes of this session will assist novice teachers in building a strong and vibrant classroom culture. Participants will have an opportunity to practice research-based tools and techniques that will unlock the talent and skill waiting in his or her students. Divided into two separate sessions for elementary and secondary teachers, each will provide concrete and specific techniques. This session will cultivate the teacher's capacity to maximize student learning and create and maintain well-managed classrooms that foster students' physical, cognitive, emotional, and social well-being.

Transitional Kindergarten - District Planning and Implementation Workshop (Session 4)

To ensure that California children are better prepared to succeed in kindergarten and beyond, the Riverside County Office of Education is supporting districts in implementing the Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010 by providing a Transitional Kindergarten (TK) Planning and Implementation workshop series. This workshop series will assist districts by providing the information, resources, and timeline for the successful implementation of Transitional Kindergarten. Session 4 will provide in-depth facilitated planning time for district transitional kindergarten teams and site principals to meet with content experts that will guide and assist them with the decision-making process in the areas of:

Differentiated Instruction for English Learners: Elementary Level (K-5)

(3 Day Event) Feb 07, 2012 - Feb 22, 2012

In this three-day institute, participants will explore the fundamentals of differentiated instruction and learn how to use principles of differentiation to address the specific needs of all learners, including English learners. The needs of long-term English learners will be a particular focus. Participants will view videos that demonstrate differentiated instruction across several classroom settings. Participants will learn how to align English language arts (ELA) standards, English language development (ELD) standards, and content area standards with the curriculum they are already using to develop content area specific skills as well as academic English language proficiency. Participants are asked to bring their teacher's edition(s) for the subject area(s) they teach.

Office 2007 Excel Formulas

This 3-hour course is designed for competent Excel users. This class will concentrate on the creation of formulas from scratch or using the pre-built formulas in Excel to enhance their spreadsheets.

RCOE will bill districts as per the service agreement at the rate of $65 per person (without certification) or $100 per person (with certification) or at the group rate (10 or more people) of $55 per person (without certification) or $90 per person (with certification). Three hour classes are billed at $50 per person (without certification) or $65 per person (with certification) or at the group rate (10 or more people) of $40 per person. California Department of Education "Highly Qualified Teacher" Workshop

Event Date: Feb 07, 2012
This workshop will focus on the "Highly Qualified Teacher" requirements related to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). Topics will include an overview of the ESEA teacher compliance requirements, instructions on how to complete the Certificate of Compliance form, the High Objective Uniform State Standard of Evaluation Process (Part 1 and 2), the Verification Process for Special Settings, and the applicability of these requirements to charter schools. The Workshop will include time for questions and answers.
