							<title><![CDATA[Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC)]]></title>
							<description><![CDATA[ <strong>(4 Day Event)</strong> Feb 03, 2012 - Mar 17, 2012<br \>  
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: ">Currently 46.2% of entering first-time freshmen to the California State University System (CSU) must take remedial classes in reading and writing.<span>&nbsp; </span>As part of CSU&rsquo;s Early Assessment Program (EAP), an augmentation on the 11th grade California Standards Test (CST) in English, identified these students in need of additional instruction to help them meet the proficiency requirements of college English courses.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: ">&nbsp;</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: ">CSU and practicing high school teachers have designed 11th and 12th grade curriculum materials to give needed support to these students.<span>&nbsp; </span>Standards-aligned materials are organized around a template that includes pre-reading, reading, post-reading, pre-writing, writing, and post-writing, as well as academic vocabulary and grammar.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: ">&nbsp;</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: ">High school junior and senior English teachers will be given a series of lessons designed to prepare students for the expository reading and writing demands they will face in CSU English courses.<span>&nbsp; </span>These materials can be offered as a stand-alone, A-G approved course, or as &ldquo;drop-in&rdquo; units in regular and advanced English courses.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: ">&nbsp;</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: "><span> </span>This four-day training is presented by CSU faculty and Riverside County junior and senior English teachers. As part of the training, teachers will receive a set of professional reference books, as well as the two binders of template-based lessons.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="color: #000000;"><span style="font-size: xx-small; font-family: verdana,geneva;">Based on the premise that <em style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">all</em> children can learn, this session helps participants deliver effective lessons that can significantly improve achievement for all learners, including English learners. &nbsp;Participating teachers will consider ways to differentiate instruction based upon their students&rsquo; primary language and proficiency levels in English.&nbsp; This working session will utilize student data, including CELDT scores, to design assessments to key understandings.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">&nbsp; </span>Integrating these highly-effective methods can improve instruction and achievement for every student.</span></span></p>

							<title><![CDATA[Differentiated Instruction for English Learners:  Elementary  Level (K-5)]]></title>

<p class="MsoNormal">In this three-day institute, participants will explore the fundamentals of differentiated instruction and learn how to use principles of differentiation to address the specific needs of all learners, including English learners.&nbsp; The needs of long-term English learners will be a particular focus.&nbsp; Participants will view videos that demonstrate differentiated instruction across several classroom settings.&nbsp; Participants will learn how to align English language arts (ELA) standards, English language development (ELD) standards, and content area standards with the curriculum they are already using to develop content area specific&nbsp;skills as well as academic English language proficiency.&nbsp; Participants are asked to bring their teacher's edition(s) for the subject area(s) they teach.</p>
