Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC) (4 Day Event) Apr 13, 2012 - May 19, 2012 Event Dates: Apr 13, 2012 | Apr 14, 2012 | May 12, 2012 | May 19, 2012
Currently 46.2% of entering first-time freshmen to the California State University System (CSU) must take remedial classes in reading and writing. As part of CSU’s Early Assessment Program (EAP), an augmentation on the 11th grade California Standards Test (CST) in English, identified these students in need of additional instruction to help them meet the proficiency requirements of college English courses.
CSU and practicing high school teachers have designed 11th and 12th grade curriculum materials to give needed support to these students.Standards-aligned materials are organized around a template that includes pre-reading, reading, post-reading, pre-writing, writing, and post-writing, as well as academic vocabulary and grammar.
High school junior and senior English teachers will be given a series of lessons designed to prepare students for the expository reading and writing demands they will face in CSU English courses. These materials can be offered as a stand-alone, A-G approved course, or as “drop-in” units in regular and advanced English courses.
This four-day training is presented by CSU faculty and Riverside County junior and senior English teachers. As part of the training, teachers will receive a set of professional reference books, as well as the two binders of template-based lessons.
